Unless you have fought in the Iraq war, have lost a family member there or are from Iraq, your chances of selling a piece about it are slim. Even if you can pen a smart argument on a topical subject, nobody wants to print what everyone already knows.
Most of the op-ed pieces my students have published over the years—in large publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post as well as small ones like The Star Ledger—are between and words. Longer pieces tend to be penned by well-known scribes, senators and steady columnists— not freelancers.
Beware of making too many New York or Los Angeles references in a piece aimed at The Detroit News or a website with national or international readers. Similarly, financial references and other such factors should depend on demographics. If you want to publish in lots of op-ed pages, develop multiple personalities, like the woman in the old Sally Field movie Sybil.
Our submission form contains a required field for entering your citations. We include an example as well, though you can use M. Even if you use a print source or an expert interview, you must provide a citation. Readers and judges should always know where you got your evidence.
Be concise. The editorial must not exceed words. Your title and list of sources are separate, however, and do not count as part of your word limit.
Have an opinion. Editorials are different from news articles because they try to persuade readers to share your point of view. Write your editorial by yourself or with a group.
If you are working as a team, just remember to submit all of your names when you post your entry. But please submit only one editorial per student.
Can you identify the people or experiences that have influenced you in forming this opinion? Your friends? Your family? The media or the culture in which you live? Exploring the root of your opinion demonstrates to your readers that you have thought deeply about the issues at hand. This is a good thing! Be open to your perspective becoming more complex and nuanced. Most essentially, an op-ed asserts an opinion. Vocabulary — check whether you use linking words and avoid slang.
Spelling and capitalization — check if all the words are written correctly. In addition, make sure you do not present your ideas using the lists. After all, this is an opinion essay, not a shopping list. Done right, your opinion essay will be an outstanding piece of writing.
Notes can be more. Be concise. You still have several weeks to write, but the sooner you start on your first draft, the more time you have to work on the details.
